In England indoor hockey action, one notable signing change was Maddie Hinch playing for Slough in the Prem division of the women's game. Having moved south from Leicester, away from the bright lights of European competitions and Premier league fixtures, to join a newly promoted ambitious side looking for promotion in Holcombe, it was interesting to see her not play for them in indoor fixtures. But the England and GB goalkeeper signed up to play for Slough instead, helping the side out with their rearguard and upgrading their goalie options. Whether she'll be playing again for them next season will be interesting to see, especially if Holcombe do achieve promotion in the outdoor competition of the national league East conference this season.

Hearsey: the comeback kid (or lady)!
With Hinch off to Holcombe after impressing at the World Hockey League, Leicester are short a starter in between the sticks. But fear not! One interesting story is about to take place, with a comeback scenario in the form of Kerry Hearsey, something you only dream about or hear in the world of boxing, the sport of dreams and sport where dreams come true. With no-one else around to step in, she has been given the golden opporunity (a sort of Willy Wonka hockey ticket analogy?!) of playing in her stead. It's quite the Hollywood story with the 31 year old (actually a good age for a goalkeeper, but she'll have to work off the rust quite rapidly!) coming out of self imposed retirement to compete again at a high level of hockey.
Hearsey played in the States and at competitive NCAA level for a while as a university student on scholarship (I can only assume!), and now has the chance to shine in the highest levels of domestic women's hockey in England. It will be interesting to see if she has still got what it takes, especially for Leicester to try and repeat a league winning season or triumph in the European league, as age might have slowed her reactions, but age and life experience will have helped with the pressure and stress situation of playing in goal, so swings and roundabouts, although who knows, only time will tell!

Hinch impressing at the WHL
Maddie Hinch has been in fine form of late for England after taking over from retiree Beth Storry. One display of her abilities, in particular, was her multiple, consecutive save making, in the game against South Africa. Beginning the sequence was a spectacular diving stop on a short corner away to her right, followed by a series of saves, where she stayed in the play and kept competing in order to keep the ball out of the net and England ahead! I think she managed to make four (yes, four, not always something you see at this level!) in total and made sure she scrambled across to cover just in case, finally aided by her defence who were then able to get the ball clear.

Cannock women's 1stXI goalkeeper another in Monarch
Another Monarch hockey user making use of their new foam redesigns, is Cannock women's starting goalkeeper. Playing in Monarch foam for quite some time, she is making use of the new Heritage design (unless it's the other foam option available!) and the new lhp glove design. Although in terms of kit she's obviously using the Obo hi control rhp and padded shorts. A red colour set-up is quite an interesting look for glare as the shooters look to target in on goal!

Another kit sighting sees England and Leicester goalkeeper Maddie Hinch using the Obo hi rebound (larger profile, blocking) rhp versus the hi control she has been using for quite some time throughout her playing career. She switched back to the hi control (tube style) rhp for the penalty shuffles though, potentially for attaking style and tackles regards strong ground work. Interesting to see if she will adapt her playing style to make use of the larger blocking surface for save making.

Williamson starts again for Surbiton
Looks like Williamson was the prefered option (unless there was another reason!) for Surbiton as she took over 'in between the sticks' for the Surrey side in the Champions playoff tournament last weekend. Starting in place of Walker, her performances did little to affect their eventual placing. Her competitor's old side Canterbury beat Surbiton to see them finish fourth and miss out on European action.
