2014/15 Now Pensions league goalkeepers: All change at Cannock

In the saga of goalkeeper transfers this summer transfer window, with actually quite a busy period of goalkeepers moving and registering elsewhere, a big question mark was going to be hovering over Cannock after their young deputy Patrick Smith left for Sussex side, presumably to keep him close to the central system for international selection behind Pinner. After breaking into the first team and proving his worth, he has quickly departed the side that helped in his maturation (whilst at uni), in search of newer pastures and opportunities, leaving Cannock slightly in the lurch.

Another big summer goalie move sees Paddy Smith leave Cannock for EG.

Goalkeepers:
  • David Forrester - new arrival looking to prove his ability
  • James Fair - more than capable second choice
Incoming - David Forrester from Old Loughtonians
Outgoing - Patrick Smith to East Grinstead

After impressing with Old Loughtonians in his debut season in the English national leagues last season, after impressing in the Scottish leagues, Forrester is sure to want , being ambitious and hard working. Fresh from a league experience that saw him take his side to third place in a tightly contested league, he will be definitely looking to take from that in his Prem experience (making it three first team Scottish goalkeepers in the Prem - four including Tommy - very worth taking note of in comparing Scotland's development of their goalkeepers!). Cannock didn't have a great defensive record last season, so Forrester will need to work well with his back four and perform well in a commanding role to lower the GAA (goals against average) and stop them leaking goals.

Time for Forrester to shine
With Patrick Smith leaving for EG, and international involvement, the stage is now Forrester's. With Fair phasing himself out of first team action and duties (taking time out to go traveling), Cannock needed to find a suitable replacement with long term potential for shoring up their goalkeeping department. Cannock struggled defensively, and Smith was busy in between the posts for the Staffordshire side, so David will be good at applying his athleticism to corners and interceptions, as Smith had to last time round.
