Given that the new season is now just around the corner, it would seem appropriate that I get started on a round-up of the goalkeepers that will be starting games over the course of the new season. I will try and add a bit of depth and twist going forward as I try and replicate the similar football template format (which would probably be helped by a fantasy system!).
Goalkeepers:
Incoming - Jamie Cachia from Sheffield Hallam
Beeston have seemingly carried three goalkeepers for a while now, so the addition of Cachia in one respect doesn't really change too much. Ashley was already providing capable cover for Pinner for international duties and yet an injury to their prized goalkeeper saw him and do a great job regardless. With Cachia, Ashley will be looking to push him for all he's worth, to make the decision for the coaching staff. Dan Darby is still around, building off junior international experience, looking for a transition as with East Grinstead's young third choice Jack.
From the outset, it looks as if Cachia and Watson will be going head to head to see who will take the shirt and run with it. And this gives a great option for Beeston as they are fortunate to have two great options, as well as having the freedom of international cover should Cachia have other commitments pressing. Reading will also potentially have a goalie tandem and potential battle going on for first place as well, but having two able first team goalkeepers on a team sheet is not the standard/norm/stereotype of English hockey over recent years, making this season pretty unique.
With Pinner giving up his spot after a long time of service at the club, further opportunities arrive for those at the club. Both goalkeepers will make it a tough decision for selection every weekend by Beeston coaching staff, with both capable and hungry; Cachia with the upside of pushing for Scottish appearances and beyond.
Predicted starter:
I expect Cachia to be given the starts from the get go, but having said that, Ashley will be wanting to prove he is more than capable at this level, having waited in the wings (building off his playing time in Doncaster) and getting game time last season. If Cachia stumbles, then expect Ash to takeover and grab the opportunity...
Season predictions:
I expect to see Beeston finish first on second, on the basis that they will be looking to dominate the league, continuing on as if Pinner had never left. Beeston were like a free scoring Brazilian team (i.e. not the one seen in Rio!)
Pinner's big move to Holcombe vacates his long held spot at Beeston.
Goalkeepers:
- Jamie Cachia (joining from Sheffield Hallam, with Pinner leaving for Holcombe),
- Ashley Watson - deputised for Pinner whilst he was out with injury, after joining from Doncaster where he was long time first choice
- Dan Darby (home product/future prospect not likely to feature)
