'Clemo' playing in India

Australian goalkeeper Tristan Clemons is another 'import' goalie currently playing in the HIL in India. Back off from his successes at selection for international level and club and AHL (Australian Hockey League - Oz yearly super league) achievements, his play has caught the eye of selectors in the overseas league. Chosen to play for the Kalinga Lions, he has been putting in some good performances so far for his new team, whilst donning Gryphon's newly designed first ever helmet which should be available more widely soon!

Lowell in his second Super 9 Series

With the Kookaburras hosting their second Super 9 Series after last year's success with the fast paced adaptation of our beautiful game, goalkeeper Nathan Lowell was given his second run "in between the sticks" for his national team as they looked to triumph. Lowell who got noticed for his battling attitude in the AHL impressed Charlesworth enough to get included in the first choice squad in the long term build up for the next Olympic games. Given his chance in friendlies against Korea, he is being given the opportunity to compete. Tristan Clemons was included as the second choice for the Kookaburras in World Cup qualifying, so it will be interesting to see who Charlesworth turns to next year in the tournament!

Hayward back in Kookaburras setup

With the Olympic cycle calendar starting to build up, it's interesting to see Leon Hayward get included in the Kookaburras squad for the Super 9 series (which is not so recent as it was a while ago now!). Leon, who was a standout for the U21's in the last Junior World Cup held in Malaysia and Indonesia four years ago now (the next will be coming round the corner quite quickly!), seems to have been a fringe choice with coach Ric Charlesworth looking to include other more mature goalkeeping choices, given Australia's more realistic and sensible approach of bringing their goalkeepers in later rather than expecting too much of young talent and burning it out. Leon has been involved with the Australian indoor squad, graduating from his U21 days, so would have quite easily adapted to this smaller squad sized outdoor style of our game (which worryingly may be pushed as the format for the Olympics as they look to crowd please!). And with experience with Australia A, I don't think it will be too long for him to wait to get his chance at an Olympic campaign.

Clemo makes the cut: interview

As mentioned, it looks like "Clemo" has the potential to be around as a second or reserve choice for the Kookaburras as they move through the developmental stages and tournament practises for the build up to the next Olympics in its four year cycle, having impressed enough to be part of the squad going to the next stage in the World Hockey League. Here he is chatting with Gryghon about the new kit he's wearing (being sponsored by them and all that!) and about being included in the squad:

Clemo gets some time with the Kookaburras

With the World Hockey League semi-finals at the moment, there have been some debutant goalkeepers (or at least less experienced international goalkeepers getting more games!). After the friendly series for the Kookaburras, it looks like "Clemo" has made the cut for now for the Australian side, getting time with the squad. It looks like Charlesworth is still splitting time for the goalkeepers as Clemo played half the game, splitting the match with Charter who seems to be staking his claim as first choice, which is rather confusing to be honest! In regards to dragging out the conquest for first choice and making it confusing for the back four as they get used to different goalkeepers; the way the play and the way they communicate with their defenders.

In the following footage you can see that Charter has made the switch to ice hockey elbow pads (worn the wrong way round for more coverage over the arm) and that Clemo is using the new design rhp by Gryphon, from the tube style he has always used before.
