This probably swings down to personal bias. Even though there were some strong performances by young goalkeepers who have not played at this level before, like Romain Henet at Leopold or Calzada at Terrassa; who by showing what they are capable of and with youth on their side to continue their development, could attract interest for country (i.e. national team involvement/training squad) or other elite clubs, like Harte moving to Holland's Hoofdklasse after some strong performances for home club Pembroke Wanderers during the Euro's. Whilst some goalkeepers outdid themselves (Stubbe's MOTM performance, Reuss' triple save and Bailey's athleticism), others seemed to cruise through the stages, Leroy seemed to not have much to do but did it well anyway, whilst Stockmann had little to do for his team, as seemingly usual (he gets the job done though and harder to concentrate when you only see about two shots a game, swings and roundabouts!).
But, anyway, I think it's a toss up between Reuss, Bailey and Stubbe. But that's just me. Stubbe made some great stops, totally dominating on corners, like Potton also did. Corners are where it's at! But, seriously, teams should be converting on corners each time, so truly elite goalkeepers with strong shot stopping, should be dominating. I always wanted to and did my best to (often can, debatable now, not that good anymore!), you should too!
Even then, each goalkeeper had their faults. Stubbe played a blinder but couldn't be the difference maker against Amsterdam. Bailey also had a 'blinder' to beat heavyweight Rotterdam but couldn't match it against the Dragons. And Reuss was unfortunate getting beat in ET.
So, goalkeeper of the weekend?
Has to be one of them. I'll just go with my gut and say Reuss. Everyone else would probably stay Stubbe and rightly so with his performance and being awared MOTM for it. And this is where personal bias swings in!
But Reuss made a great triple save attempt (ball ended up squeezing between his legs for the goal) and dominated on corners. That level and that level of confidence could see him on his way to being one of the world's best sooner rather than later. Graduating from the U21's to the full men's squad for Germany sees him having got games in the recent Champions Trophy international tournament last year. Coupled with playing Euro Hockey and in the Bundesliga for club so early on (he was in the Euro's last season). Weinhold *looks* (as I say, no confirmation, appears so!) like he's being phased out from Rio, with Jacobi starting for now, so Reuss could be able to go when step further and ultimately take over and do so with dominating performances. No mean feat for a 22 year old - goalkeeper - ! As in goalkeepers aren't expected to mature so quickly!!
Bailey is showing he can play at this level. He has the intensity (immediate recoveries), athleticism (diving stops and getting across to cover) and reflexes/reactions to play at the elite level, and the more elite level of the Euro tournament (being exposed to other styles of game and potentially teams from stronger domestic leagues). I just think he needs to be a little more commanding and dominating to take the final step in his overal game as a goalkeeper. And be more consistent! Nitpicking but you've got to if you're analysing the best who have less to do (even if it's more crucial!) to improve!!
So yeah, personally, it's Reuss. Objectively it's Stubbe. But none of them played with this consistency. The there all had awesome games but then couldn't play to that same level in consequent action...
