The Olympics: ones to watch

I don’t know much about the women’s goalkeepers, but the men’s is a good showcase of elite goalkeeping. Competition for the number 1 spot for Australia was tough, with Beazley being left out and Andrew Charter being named as the reserve and as competitive as Burgers is, Australia look to dominant the games from the outset. I was surprised at the selection of Vanash as the first choice for Belgium but he has shown he can play consistently at the elite level with good showings for his domestic team Waterloo Ducks, so they could be riding the ‘hot hand’. I think Jacobi could be a better choice than Weinhold (I personally don’t like his technique), but I guess Weinhold has a gold medal to his name from the previous Olympic campaign (and I don't)!

Vivaldi has shown he can provide his nation with great goalkeeping to back stop their chances, as a notable performance against the Netherlands a while back demonstrates. Rassie Pieterse will look to make the most of his chance after Hibbert’s retirement. After coming out of Ali McGregor’s shadow, Fair will be eager to make the most of his opportunity and has pulled off good performances in the lead up to his home nation tournament.
