Season in review: Forrester has what it takes

Seeing as I didn't manage to offer much in-season analysis (really need to work on it), thought I'd do some writing up of reviewing the season. With a few new goalkeepers in the league, and a few changes at key parts of the season, there are some good opportunities to do so. First up is David Forrester who moved all the way down from Scotland (think that should be read as Scawtland just to get the point across! Or at least with an appropriate dialectal sounding phrase... anyhoo...) to the new surroundings of Essex to play for East conference side Old Loughtonians. Joining fellow Scottish goalkeepers, Sheffield's Jamie Cachia and Holcombe's Allan Dick in the English national league system, having 'earnt his colours' in the Scottish national league whilst studying at Edinburgh University and then Inverness.

Having been involved in the Scottish international too, with regular game experience racked up to total a well rounded and developed goalkeeper, the challenge wasn't too tough for the young goalkeeper with opportunity to push himself further and 'keep on trucking' at the elite levels of hockey goalkeeping.

And with Old Loughtonians needing a solid goalkeeper to build their team around, after the retirement of their starter, long time servant Stuart Hendy having 'hung up the pads' (he himself taking over from George Harris as a young goalie at the time, who obviously went across to East Grinstead to try his luck) meant they were struggling. Chris Naven got his chance, but with the assuredness of having a goalkeeper of international ability, Old Loughts have been able to

At this level a goalkeeper needs to be: consistent, reliable, commanding and . And Forrester has shown his ability in all of these areas. Earning quite a few clean sheets has also shown his ability to work well with the defence in front of him to cut down the number of scoring chances that can become possible; something overlooked but crucial for goalkeepers looking to limit the opponent's scoring.

Most importantly, David has been able to 'shut it down' (i.e. act like a wall and keep everything out!), at important times in the game, making game changing stops at key scoring opportunities like short corners (as the link below shows). Helping them to a third place finish behind Southgate and Holcombe, he should be proud of his achievements this year, as well as earning further international call-ups, standing in good stead to build off his debut season in the English national league!

The clip itself shows great athleticism, as well as the decisive turn-at-the-wrist technical application to push the shot out wide and away to safety.

Dick and Forrester representing Scotland in indoor

With the indoor season more than underway, international friendlies are also on the go. Scottish international and Holcombe star Allan Dick has been playing for his country in indoor competition alongside fellow National League East Conference compatriot (and opponent!) David Forrester. Both have been partaking in the English indoor season so far with Allan playing for his Kent side club and David playing for Essex side Old Loughtonians. Or at least David will be, when his fixtures start at the weekend!! Holcombe have been doing pretty well so far, and having helped them gain promotion to the Premier division last seaso, I'm sure Allan will being doing all he can to help them stay! Unfortunately no photos/videos (that I've been able to uncover!) of the guys in action for Scotland!

Cachia wearing new Obo rhp design

With Obo's new rhp design, an improvement on the existing version of the Obo hi rebound rhp on its way into shops in the not-so-distant-future, Sheffield Hallam's starter Jamie Cachia has been spotted wearing the glove in the NOW Pension's premier league division. Scottish international Cachia who has experimented with using the TK rhp design previously, and making the switch over to the Obo design more recently, making good use of it in Sheffield's promotion winning season, he's giving the new version a run out having tried the new Monarch D3O design (made in conjunction with George Pinner's input) early on this season, as blogged about previously. Obo has been testing the design of late with Kyle Pontifex giving it a run out at the London Olympics before going into production stages. With the chance for more movement and wrist turning/rotation to angle rebounds up and away when saving to the right, the glove has been redesigned to allow this, going along the lines of Jimi Lewis and Tommy Alexander's mods that gave the same results.

You can see Cachia here with the glove in use against Surbiton recently:

Forrester's shiny new kit at Old Loughtonians

Having made the journey down south from Scotland, and making the switch to the English national league from Inverness, to ply his playing trade with Old Loughtonians in the East conference, Edinburgh graduate David Forrester can be seen wearing a new colour combo in his Obo foam. A yellow/pink number it's quite bold, helping him stand out from the crowd. Quite dashing and overtly "swag" they look pretty snazzy with the all black top/shorts set-up he has got going on. Seems like the most interesting colour set-up in the leagues, with others pretty dull in comparison!

Below you can see the kit in all its glory, via the links, courtesy of Peter Savage's photography:
