2014/15 Now Pensions league goalkeepers: East Grinstead welcome Smith

With Patrick Smith departing for the south in search of playing opportunities, East Grinstead have taken the opportunity to bring in a young goalkeeper with great potential, already being involved in the England setup since impressing in his time with the U21's. England look to be sorting out their goalkeeping depth with a few prospective talents being given more opportunities to play and develop, but there can always be more room for improvement at whatever stage. For EG, who are looking for a return to Europe and to their high achieving status, have worked well to bring in a highly touted young goalie, but it remains to be seen who will get the nod for the season's games.

Goalkeepers:

  • Patrick Smith (England A and full squad, former England U21)
  • Richard Potton (England A)
  • Jack Edgerton (youth development product)

Incoming - Patrick Smith from Cannock

What next?
From an external perspective, I have no idea if Smith will get the lion's share of games, or if the central system will keep him involved in England training sessions as the buildup to further competitions increases. When Potton returned from Lufbra, youth was given the chance over the depth of experience in George Harris (who for a matter of fact is still going strong at Fareham), so perhaps the same will occur again. Either way, they have strengthened their goalkeeping department, but Smith who got in the rhythm of making numerous saves all game long behind a weaker defence, will have to transition into a different role in a tight team going forward.

Predicted starter:

Presumably Potton will start, but the first few games should give a proper indication...

Prediction for the season:

I expect Grinstead to push for a table topping season, as they look to change their recent stroke of fortune. Multiple internationals on the team sheet are sure to be out to impress and improve the scorelines.
