So it's official; Patrick Smith is off to East Grinstead, leaving question marks over who will be in goal for Cannock by September. Smith makes it the third goalkeeper transfer of the off-season so far, and will be interesting to see how things develop over the remaining weeks before pre-season kicks off. In the game against East Grinstead where I did get to see Smith play in person, he was the real reason Cannock were in the game, making key interceptions diving low with his stick as well as otherwise game winning saves to help his team mates. East Grinstead are looking to make a mark in Europe after their dropped table positioning last season, and whilst Patrick is young and therefore has ample time to develop into a real breadwinner, it seems to be a worrying trend of rushing goalkeepers' development and putting too much pressure on young shoulders etc. No idea if he will move straight in at first choice, so seems a case of "watch this space".
