Aside from current health giving me little energy to work with and the paranoid android twitchiness after someone who wants to remain nameless that really felt the need to get off their chest how moronic my spelling is, I'm finding it a little difficult to come up with regular in the dry patch of off-season...
With the KO16 and KO8 now done and dusted, with the final stages of the Euro Hockey League to take , it's worth reflecting on who has been the best goalkeeper of this season's tournament. So let's start by making note of the goalkeepers that were in action:
Goalkeeper voting/ranking
Other than St Germain's Zylbermann and Chyla, the competition between goalkeepers was pretty even. I would say Trenches really stood out with some multiple save sequences that kept his team in with a fight, whilst Fabregas and Leroy were showing a strong technical grounding. Gucassoff continues to show off his status as a shootout specialist, proving he's probably one of, if not, the world's best goalkeeper at the 'shuttles' right now.
Top goalkeeper?
Gucassoff obviously stood out with his save making in the shootout to even things up for his team mates. When looking at Fabregras, Reuss, Leroy, Harte, Jenniskens, Blaak, Vanasch and Kettle, we are talking about goalkeepers who all have a depth of experience with their national teams and of elite level hockey. So picking a clear cut goalkeeper who was above the rest is a pretty difficult task.
Not many goalkeepers were really tested by their opponents to the stretch of having to pull off unbelievable saves when it mattered, so there isn't much chance to go with that as a decider in the knockout stages. This meant they were pretty even in terms of quality in order to select the most obvious standout competitor. But in terms of their MVP status for their teams, I would go for Kettle, Trenches or Leroy because of how much they kept their team in it at key points of the game when things could have gone either way.
Will try and do some analysis via highlight clips but other than Gucassoff's almost rule breaking stick, there wasn't much pomp to go with the goalkeeping displays this year.
