Stubbings using written encouragers; mental triggers (sound advice!)

Action photos of the recent Maxifuels 5 a side finals brought up some interesting ideas with the goalies who were playing. As you can see below, if you look in the picture linked below, you can notice Canterbury's Stubbings with some writing put on some tape put on his glove, sort of like a sticky note on the back hand. What you're seeing here is basically what they call a trigger in sports psychology. It's used by a lot of goalies in ice hockey and football (soccer). Hope Solo for example has words that remind her to stay positive put on her wrist straps on her gloves. The idea is to lift the goalkeeper's spirits if they're being overly critical or negative, which is affecting them negatively in their performance; losing focus and getting caught up in the score instead of doing everything they can to keep the scoreline down and help their team mates. Its a trigger to "turn up the volume" to speak and ignite the goalie to play better or at of their skin!

Like Patrick Roy or Martin Brodeur, or even Eddy Belfour, in the NHL, marker pens are sometimes used to write words that are key triggers to a goalie's psychie to help them "up their game" during the match, refocusing and refinding the "battling instinct" instead of getting defeatist and losing even more greatly. Neville Southall, the "binman" goalie, read up a lot on golf psychology and the wise goalies with longer careers and good track records are the ones that open their minds and develop their game on every possible level.

It's interesting to see it being used at high level hockey as it's something more often associated with goalies from other sports. And it's something I'd encourage you to add to your game, especially if it helps!!
